Emily is an adorable 6 year old girl who just arrived from a farm in Oklahoma. She had several greyhound puppies in 2005 but she never raced so she is definately ready for a comfortable bed and some good attention. She was slightly timid at first but easily warmed up and was friendly and curious. She is cat tolerant with supervision. She is in a foster home and updates will follow about this beautiful girl--her pictures don't do her justice (some of us are photogenic and some of us are not.)
Foster Home Update: Fostering Emily has been rewarding, surprising and humbling. Rewarding, because she is blossoming right before my eyes, and there are really no words that can express how good that makes you feel! Surprising, because after GFNJ bathed her, we found out she is not only WHITE, except for that adorable brindle ear, but also very pretty with those big, soft dark eyes! Her coat just needs some TLC, just like Emily does. Humbling, because life wasn't easy in Oklahoma and this girl lived there for 6 years. Yet she responds to a little attention and affection with greyhound smiles, body wiggles and tail wags! These dogs are so forgiving. I think the most endearing qualities about Emily are her gentleness and responsiveness. When I sit on the floor with Emily, she is so snuggly, I don't want to get up. She burrows into me as if she has finally come home, and is totally content. Emily loves her soft bed and settles next to me at night with a big sigh. She has discovered toys and flips them in the air and catches them and runs around like a puppy. She likes the other greyhounds, and rests her head on their backs in typical greyhound fashion when they gather together. She has learned stairs, has not had even one accident in the house, will jump right into the car, and travels beautifully. She is learning the household routine, and is not crated since she is a very good girl. She liked meeting the nice Rottweiler who lives next door, and joins the other dogs to get pets from neighbors who offer them at the fence. I think Emily could be an only dog if she has her human around a lot, but she would be lonely without company. She would probably be happiest with another greyhound or other breed nice dog to keep her company, and I think she deserves to be happy now. She would also continue to gain confidence at a faster pace with another dog setting an example that she doesn't need to be at all shy, that she is a pet now, and life will continue to be good.
A fenced yard will be best for Emily since she had very little experience with a leash in Oklahoma, and it would be nice if she could get the hang of it without pressure, when walks can be for enjoyment - not because they are a necessity to relieve herself. I am looking forward to introducing you to Emily at the GFNJ open house on April 13th. I think you will see what I mean about Emily, how she wants to love and trust, and probably you'll fall in love with her in about 60 seconds (if you last that long!)
